Sheffield United Kingdom Sheffield History

Sheffield History

The South Yorkshire city of Sheffield began as a settlement in a clearing beside the River Sheaf and the area has been home to humans since at least the last ice age, however growth in size was not to occur in any significant way until the Industrial Revolution.

After the Norman conquest of England, Sheffield Castle was built to control the Saxon settlements and a small town sprang up around it.

Sheffield’s association with the production of knives had already begun by the 14th century and by 1600 it was the main centre of cutlery production in England.

The crucible steel process was refined by Benjamin Huntsmen in the 1740s around the same time as the silver plating process – known as Sheffield Plate – was developed. Both led to rapid expansion and by the 20th century Sheffield had become a major industrial hub.

However, the steel industry began to decline from the 1970s onwards, regeneration programmes initiated from the lates ‘80s managed to stop the rot and now the city is one undergoing rapid transformation.
