Like many of northern England’s ex-industrial cities Sheffield is working hard to reinvent itself as a modern cosmopolitan city. And that work is paying off, Sheffield is beginning to be known for more than beer, steel and snooker.

The steel industry that has made “Sheffield Steel” stamped cutlery famous worldwide has been scaled down, while snooker and beer are still part of the city’s culture with the Snooker World Championships held there annually, while boutique breweries are always adding to the impressive array of beers on offer.

As one of Britain’s main engineering centers, the city was heavily bombed in World War II. A second challenge was to occur in the 1980s when the steel industry went into sharp decline.

However, the city is bouncing back and quickly. The centre has been transformed by flagship architectural projects including the primary symbol of the Sheffield’s regeneration the Winter Gardens.

Swanky clubs and up-market galleries exist alongside business in the reinvigorated Cultural Industries Quarter, while warehouses have been done-up in the canal basin at Victoria Quays.

The Devonshire Quarter ranks as the trendiest shopping area, while excellent restaurant and bars have created a vibrant nightlife for the thousands of university students.
